Backing up Windows Mobile 5 devices

I see that backing up the device via ActiveSync is not now an option on a WM5 device - who in their infinite wisdom decided to take away the option!
I know Sprite software can do this, but are there ay other options out there for WM5 devices?
Thanks
Martin

erm back up wasn't usually done via active sync, synchronisation was but this never backed up data that was not a sync item.

I have 3.7.1 cos it lets me sync wirelessly but i run 2003SE with ipaq back up
try the support forums on the ipaq website.

I wasted/spent a few hours trying to find a free or shareware backup thing for my mda compact 2. Ended up shelling out for sprite, and very good it is too.

Ummm, backup and restore were most certainly options in activesync up to and including PPC 2003, you could backup EVERYTING including apps you had installed. WM5 devices are now using non volatile memory more, so you don't need to do this ('they' reckon).

There are after market solutions, I've found some great stuff at;

PocketGear.com - Your Complete Pocket PC Resource!

I'm sure I spotted some backup software

oooh I found it, never used it as I always backed up to a CF or SD card using ipaq back up so never really went looking for it.

I simply back-up using the back-up option, move the file to another location on my SD card called "back-ups" where it sites with 9 of it's predecessors and copy that data in Windows Explorer from time to time.

Where is the backup option?
Please note this is not for me but a mate who bought one of the eBay IPAQ RX1955 linked to by Fiona last week and I was showing him round and was keen for him to back up what he had and was surprised to not be able to do it via Tools, Backup/Restore on ActiveSync (which is what i do on my IPAQ with PPC2002).
There are a couple of utilities, neither of them free, but I just don't remember seeing an option for backup when looking at my mate's one.
Regards
Martin

Mmmm...

Maybe I have a different OS version but the back-up utility should be in the programs folder - that's where mine is.
