ActiveSync problem?

I've just got hold of an IPAQ HX2100, but I cannot get the ActiveSync to work with my pc. I bought the IPAQ off ebay - so it's been used before.

I have installed the software on my pc from the cd. I have run the troubleshooter and it has suggested two possible problems. One is to do with McAfee personal firewall, which runs on my pc. I have changed the settings according to the instructions when I followed the link, but this didn't make any difference. The other issue it is flagging up is "unalbe to establish a connection between the pc and the device". The IPAQ came with ActiveSync 3.7.1 I have upgraded this to version 4.2. The troubleshooter link says this:

"In ActiveSync on the computer: On the File menu, click Connection Settings and select the Allow USB connections check box.

In ActiveSync on your device: Click Menu > Connections and select the Synchronize all PCs using this connection check box."

I have done the first thing, but I cannot open ActiveSync on the handheld. The icon is there but it doesn't open (everthing else seems to work ok)

Any ideas/suggestions? Have I missed something? Or is it fecked? Any help much appreciated.

Dave

I develop s/w for PPCs and get this sort of thing all the time. My usual checklist is:

1) Turn handheld (HH) on and off.
2) Remove HH from cradle and stick back in again - this is a really good tip to solve intermittent connectivity problems.
3) turn PC on and off
4) Uninstall and then Reinstall ActiveSync, making sure to be logged in as the same user as when you try to use ActiveSync
5) Hard reset the HH - see the manual, if you don't have the manual look on Search HP United Kingdom - Results - 'ipaq hx2100'. Note: Hard reset returns device to factory settings - you will lose any data.
6) Try to isloate which bit isn't working - try somebody else's cable, try somebody else's iPaq, try somebody else's PC. Do these one at a time.

You shouldn't need to change any settings on the HH for AS to connect. On the PC you have the dialog with the "Get Connected" button on it. You should only have to make sure that the "Allow USB" box is ticked (obviously).

My AS version of preference is 3.7.1 at the moment. That should work ok with the 2100.

ActiveSync is getting better, but is still a PoS.

try a soft reset on the Ipaq, to do this pres in the reset button with a paperclip( i find 'office assistant' useful for this ) and let the machine boot up it should sort it.

if not try the support forums on ipaqchoice website on main HP website. Currently at work so don't have the web addess in favourites

Oops yes - always try a soft reset before the hard reset - insert in my list above between 2 and 3.

Thanks folks - the soft reset on the handheld has resolved the problem. Greens incoming.
