Chris, I assume the Netgear router that Martin has is a router only and not a modem/router.

Martin, I have a Netgear wireless router that I use with this ADSL modem. The setup would be better with a combined modem/router, but I bought the router thinking it was a modem too so ended up buying the modem to complete the config.

Just searched on Google......try this link......

TalkTalk Broadband - Installing Broadband

Most ADSL routers sold in the UK will be ready to connect to TalkTalk Broadband. The settings should be as below. If you have any problems with your router, please contact the manufacturer. We can't offer any support for hardware we haven't supplied.

VPI = 0
VCI = 38
DNS settings (primary) 62.24.199.13
DNS settings (secondary) 62.24.199.23
Authentication = CHAP
Encapsulation mode = PPP over ATM (PPPoA). VC-MUX

You will also need your TalkTalk Broadband username and password. You'll find these in the welcome letter we sent.

hope this helps

Sorry, have never needed to do anything other than set up protection/add MAC IDs etc.

Hmmmm - Looking at the spec for a second time this might not connect to your phone line directly..... you might be best visiting a computer shop and checking - not PC World a 'proper' one if you know what I mean.

A new router will not set you back much nowadays - I only paid a £30 for my last one........

I hope this helps.................................

Thanks to all, especially Chris.
I'll get myself a new modem with an ethernet port and that should get me sorted.
Thanks again

Linksys WRT54G

The Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router is really three devices in one box. First, there's the Wireless Access Point, which lets you connect Wireless-G or Wireless-B devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices. Connect four PCs directly, or daisy-chain out to more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. Finally, the Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection, files, and other resources such as printers and hard disk storage space.

To protect your data and privacy, the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router can encode all wireless transmissions using 128-bit WEP encryption, and also supports industrial-strength Wi-Fi Protected Access™ (WPA) wireless security. The Router protects your PC from most known Internet attacks with a powerful Stateful Packet Inspection firewall. It can also serve as a DHCP Server, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. And even with all this power, set up is a snap with the web browser-based configuration utility.

With the Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router at the center of your home or office network, you can share a high-speed Internet connection, files, printers, and multi-player games with the flexibility, speed, and security you need!

Rather than buying a new modem to use on your current router. Buy a new router with a built in modem. Then sell your existing router. Neater solution and probably work out cheaper.

If it was me i'd be inclined to get a combined modem/router like the Netgear DG834 and just use that. I like all my boxes combined of possible. I see no real reason to use a modem and a router when you can use a single modem/router box.

Again, thanks for the advice/replies.
I think I shall just go for a ADSL modem to compliment what I have for the moment - I've had to pay a one-off fee of about £35 for the router, so don't want to turn changing providers into an expensive affair!
I have bid on a modem with built in ethernet port on ebay - am currently winning at just shy of a fiver!
I may consider purchasing the suggested modem/router at a later stage, but for the moment, I will stick with the cheaper option, but again, many thanks for the advice and suggestions.
Regards
Martin

Actually, I changed my mind once the modem went over a fiver and have just purchased a Netgear DG834G v2 (recommended by both jb2cool and the guys here at work), so once that's all up and running, I'll be selling my Linksys broadband router to try and get some of the cost back.
Thanks again for all the advice/help - I knew I should have listened to you all in the first place!
Thanks again
Regards
Martin

good, good. Always niver to have everything in one small package IMO.

If you need any help setting it up (YOu'll probably be fine, pretty straight forward) just give me a shout. Remember to change the login password and if you are not going to use wireless, turn it off.

If you are going to use wireless then you should secure it a bit but that's pretty easy also.
