My laser printers at work have to have their drums changed every year, sometimes even more often, dust ruins them. They have a life of between 4000 and 8000 pages.

They're a consumable component in the same way as the toner cartridge.

A recent printer review we had for work recommended buying printers and thrashing them for 3 years then replacing with new ones. In reality they probably last 4-5 years, depending upon the amount of work they get through.
