Networking via crossover cable

For past couple of years I have been using this system to connect the main computer downstairs with my laptop upstairs. This has worked fine allowing me access to my broadband connection and printer on both computers although it is necessary to have the main computer switched on. My lad is moving back home temporarily so is it possible to use a two way connector/splitter box at the end of the cable run to allow him to use his laptop in his bedroom.

Why not just buy a cheap router? That way you don't have to leave any other computers switched on.

You cannot connect more than two computers together with a crossover cable unfortunately.

What you will need is to buy a network switch (I'd discourage buying a 'hub' these days - switches are far more common now). This is (at a basic level) a splitter box, I suppose - it's got multiple ports, and you run a cable from the switch to each of the computers. Note that you need normal 'straight through' cables, not crossover cables for this.

But, I agree with nickb really - get a nice little router, configure it properly, and there's no need to leave a PC on in order for other people to be able to access the interweb.

You can even get a nice router / firewall combo with an integrated switch. That way you are also protected from the nasties of the internet as if you're directly connected into your cable modem you're directly on the internet with no protection.

(Windows Firewall ISN'T adequate protection. I've seen it easily bypassed).

Mark.
