Network cables.

I/we are moving our office up to our warehouse and I need to reestablish our computer network once we are there. This will involve running new network cables and putting the plugs on the ends.

Unfortunately the man that we normally use is unavailable when we need him and that would mean that we are without the network for 3 or 4 extra days.

I'm sure I can do the cable ends once I know what cable, what ends and the wiring order and I am hoping somone on YD can tell me that there is only one way to do this?

Most modern office networks use Cat5 (or Cat5e) UTP (unshielded twisted pair) with RJ45 ends.

You get a box of cable, pull out as much as you need, cut it, expose a small amount of the cable cores by cutting back the excess plastic sheaf, push them into an RJ45 end, make sure all the coloured cores are up to the edhe of the RJ45 end and crimp.

For straight through connections - i.e switch to PC (as opposed to switch to switch cross overs) just make sure the colours are in the same order when you do the other end.

Try Cable Standards & Pin-out Assignments
If it is hub to PC then you need a straight connection. If it is hub to hub or PC to PC then you need the cross over connection.

If your worried go and get some ready made ones.

no wiring problems, but if you fancy giving it a go check out the net there are many color diagrams out there.

The ends have to match - that's all. There reason there is a standard way to do it is so that someone can come along, lob the end off and re-crimp it without having to look at the other end - but technically it means nothing / makes no difference they just need to match.

You make the call whether or not the environment warrants following the standard - if it does then maybe it warrants waiting for a certified Mod-Tap or whatever cabling engineer to turn up.

Our man that can but can't this time has supplied us with a reel of Cat5E cable so that we could run it through for him to come and fit the ends.

Off to PC world tonight to see what they have in the way RJ45s ......... RJ45s? ..... aren't they 'gert big' iron beams?

Follow the standard!
Other wise you'll regret it, may be not today, may be not tomorrow............

But sometime in the future when no one can remeber what was done or who did it, it just makes life so much easier when standards are followed.
