Lightbulb Any use?

I used to do warranty repairs on Tosh kit, and to my surprise I still have access to their reseller website

There appear to be 2 different fans on this model:

PSA40E-0CQ1E-EN - Satellite A40-151/241/792/802
(26) DC Fan Part No. P000392060
(28) 2nd DC Fan Part No. P000392080

Have a look at the exploded diagram to sort out which is which.

As far as I know you can only order parts from an authorised dealer, give them a call here: 0870 444 8936
or have a look at the website here: Locate a Toshiba Authorised Service Provider

Fiona, thanks for that but it was the internal cooling fan.....

Muzzer, thanks for spending some time on this, much appreciated.

I've made an assumption that it's the fan thats capput, I didn't realise that there are 2!!.

The laptop comes up with a cpu over heating error message not long after starting up. I couldn't see the fan running (I know there's a power save setting for this, as far as I know this hasn't been touched)

I guess I need to strip the thing down first.

Do you have the full tech manual in electronic form?

Hi,

I had this message on a Toshiba laptop, and sent it off with my dad to the nice men at the cambridge university computer lab for repair. It came back with a note in it saying 'fan fine, memory so full that messages to start fan are not getting through. Try clearing down some of the rubbish, wich should solve the problem'! (that message was from my dad, not the nice computer men)! Might be worth a try before buying new bits?

Sorry Paul, I'm afraid I don't have the full tech manual for this model as it came out after my last training course. Unfortunately these courses are the only place you can get the manuals from.

I have had another look on the Tosh reseller website's Tech News Bulletin pages just in case it was a known "funny" to do with this model, but no joy. Sounds like you are right and the main processor fan may have died or seized up, you should be able to hear it turn on and off during normal use.
I'm fairly sure that the diagnostic utility for this model includes a test for this, I can get hold of a copy of this if you want.

As to stripping this machine down - they are fairly easy if you are good at working with small/delicate parts and don't mind the stress of "popping" the plastics apart (once you've removed all the screws of course), make sure you touch something earthed like a water pipe to get rid of any static charge you may have, or better yet buy an antistatic wriststrap from a PC shop before you touch or remove the board. One thing to remember with these is that you must be VERY CAREFUL when removing/replacing the screws, making sure you put the right length screws back in their correct places. Screwing a 10mm screw into a hole for a 6mm screw usually ends up with it going through the processor board with obvious results. New Toshes nearly always have markings (a8, b16 etc.) nex to the holes.

If you were a bit nearer to me I would offer to do it for you, PM me if you want and I'll give you my phone number so you can call me if you need help.
