Unsupported codec in WMP

Been sent a 300 MB .avi file of Bill Stone talking about cave diving. Won't open in Windows Media Player due to:

The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player.
Error ID = 0xC00D1199, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Is there a free utility to convert it to something I can play?

Smart ar$e comments like "get a different viewer" are not an option.

A program called 'G-Spot' (stop sniggering!) will tell you what codec you require in order to view the AVI.

As for converter, try a file converter called SUPER. (Free)

What I'm NOT gonna tell you about it VLC Media player which will play it I'm sure.

You got links to these - I can just see the trouble I'm going to get into searching for 'G-spot' from my office PC.

Thanks

you stand a better chance if you update the codecs:

Codec Installation Packages for IT Professionals

As above once identified if you need a bizare codec, you can search for it specifically but beware of addware and spyware when downloading codec packs!!

Ta - but this is not an option even though I do have admin rights on my office PC.

Its already running WMP10 and the page you cite suggests reinstalling it to update the codecs.

More suggestions - its a jolly good movie. I want to be able to watch it after hours rather than streaming video from Google.
