TV viewing on a PC.

Number 1 son, who doesn't have much space left in his room to fit a tv, often keeps me awake watching tv in our lounge room (outside our bedroom) and we frequently have ...lets say disagreements about this.

I understand that one can now connect/fit "peripherals"(?) which convert a PC into a tv. He's got an oldish HP Compaq Evo, with 512Mb RAM and a 1.7Gig Celeron processor and two hard drives (80 and 160 gigs I think). Free to air tv here is still analogue, for maybe another 3 or 4 years, by which time he'll have traded the current pc in. I'd like to get him something suiitable for Xmas to run analogue at least but maybe also digital if there's anything that'll do both.

Anyone have any ideas?

Richard M

You can buy digital recievers for laptops now that plug in on USB. Look at
www.ebuyer.co.uk and
PC World... UK's Largest Computer Superstore - Laptops, Desktop PCs, Printers, LCD Televisions, Digital Cameras, GPS and more.. for all its sins probably sell them cheap aswell.

you can get external USB TV tuners from about 20 quid.

analogue or digital.

internal add-in cards are also common, and can either be a dedicated TV Tuner card, or one that's integrated with the graphics card (e.g. ATI All-in-Wonder range). Depends on the expansion capacity of the PC and what he already has in there as to which is your best option.

make sure you get a decent signal source either from a co-ax off your main roof aerial or a good internal antenna.

Only thing is Martin, with your card being from the UK, any episode of Neighbours TD watches on it will be a year out of date.

Sorry, I know - coat, door

That's ok, I think you probably get current episodes of Neighbours before we do anyway. Bring back Scott & Charlene, that's what I say.

Well.... Charlene anyway.
