What's the gubbins on Apple Macs? In one of my numerous posts on the this subject someone recommended an Apple Mac as they now 'cope with' (if that is the correct term) a Win based OS?

Are the cable-less keyboards (use Bluetooth to transfer signals?) worth while or just a pain in the batteries?

The new MACs are intel based and by using 'Bootcamp' you can boot up a MAC with native Windows (generally faster than a PC).

Interestingly Vista is supposedly designed to look and feel like MAC OS and industry analysts are predicting that this is likely to backfire on Microsoft as it makes the transition from XP to MAC OS easier. They reckon a lot of people will be ditching their PCs in favour of MACs instead of buying new PCs to run Vista.

Def a PITA re. batteries in IMO. Avoid wireless keyboards and mice whenever possible.

If its for home use I'd be tempted at a secondhand machine. If you go about one spec under the current they are nearly given way. My mate's just picked up a laptop (Win XP Pro OEM) for 50 quid.

All the super-fast stuff is mainly for games and video. This machine (Dell Optiplex Win2000) does everything I need....

My technical employee has a MSDN Subscription and has tried the final release copy of windows vista. He said that it was fine but has no real advantages over xp. It looks nice but runs idle with word 2007 open using 700MB of RAM! So thats 80% of PC's unable to run it. After 2 weeks he reformatted with XP waiting for next gen pc's (ie quad core intels )

Totally brilliant - Sorry Rob.

A desk clear of cables is true bliss.

I use wire free KB and mouse at home and wired at work so the contrast is apparent daily.

Battery use is not that high. 4 a year for each device maybe.

Give one a try..

When I was using wireless Keyboard and Mouse at home (on works PC, without disrupting my home PC) I used about a battery a month in the Mouse.

The keyboard still ahs the original battery...

Same thing here, never changed the KB battery in 2 years, mouse batteries didn't last long at all.

So I got one of these:

Cordless Mice > Logitech® Cordless Click!™ Plus Rechargeable Optical Mouse

A bit pricey at first, but the comfort factor was worth the money alone.

Cordless - definitely a good idea IMO.
