Having discussed this with a mate at work, it seems that the new core 2 duo chips can be installed into older boards (which is an area of concern for me, I've had puters with cheap or old tech boards before and they've always been dogs...) so I think I'll be doing a lot more research before parting with my cash

All the ideas have been good so far, thanks all

huh? not true as far as I know?

100% sure for desktops as the Core2Duo uses a different socket. so it is incompatible with older intel sockets.

as along as you buy a decent brand one = should be fine unless you have a specific requirement.

Acer laptops are pretty good. I bought one from Laptops Direct - Buy Cheap Laptops in the UK. Laptop Computers, Cheap Notebooks, New Cheap Laptop, Used and Refurbished Laptops. Find bargain Laptop Computers for Home or Business. based in Yorkshire. Some good deals to be had.

Alternatively, if you can afford it, Dell are also doing some good deals. However, like for like specfication will probably see the Dell machine being somewhat more expensive.
