Computer speaker problems!

Well, low and behold I come home on leave and yet again my parents have managed to mess up the computer!!

I'm not too bothered this time, as I have my laptop, but I've been asked to sort theirs out again!!

Anyway, the problem is we can't any sound to play from the computer eg. anything from Media Player or error beeps etc. What is really strange though is that when you put a CD in, it plays it, but not through anything?? Not through meida player, real player, sonic or anything - it just plays, but with no way of controlling it.

So, the speakers are working, but the computer is basically acting like a hifi/ amplifier.

Anybody any ideas?

Jen

I have reinstalled the sound drivers, done everthing i can think of ans still no sound....NOTHING. If i go into summat or other it says its working OK
This is an onboard sound card (so i believe)

So now maybe someone can help two of us at once....double the 'greenies'

So there's nothing wrong with your speakers as you are getting sound through them when you play a cd.

If you want to see what's playing the cd then look in the task manager to see whats running (right mouse click on the bottom taskbar then choose task manager).

Here's a link that might help No sound in Windows Media Player

Let me know how you both get on!

Cds can play directly through the sound card without the computer getting involved, there's a cable between the cd player and the sound card. Are you sure the sound hasn't just been muted? There should be a little speaker in the system tray, bottom left or go through the control panel. Also check that the drivers are ok in the device manager.

in control panel also check that the appropriate audio device is selected.

Start-->Control Panel -->Sound and Audio Devices --> Audio (3rd Tab From the right)

Make sure your sound card is selected there. If you have more than one sound card, ensure that it is the same soundcard as that connected to your speakers. Made that mistake before

In that same window, you can check your volume settings, etc

test the sound works by playing the generic windows sounds in the Sound tab. just select a sound and press play at the bottom.

Hope that helps.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. In the end Dad ended up taking the computer to bits and managed to fix it, but I'm not sure how. I think he updated the driver too. Bit annoyed that he could have done all this before I sat for a few hours playing with it - grrrr!

Anyway, it's fixed now. Thanks for your help,

Jen
