Best of luck with it, when are they coming?

I spent almost 2 hours on the phone to NTHell last night as they broke our connection when they came to upgrade the (fully working) modem! useless B'Stards.

I have had BT BB for a couple of years and they are pretty good.

I am thinking of getting Orange BB too as a backup, it's free for mobile customers like me

Andy

I don't think "they" are coming at all. I have received everything by courier and I'm just waiting for BT to switch/enable a broadband service on my phone line.

It shouldn't be too difficult if the instructions are anything to go by ............. in short, please check here tomorrow morning as I'll be begging for someone to give me the answers to all the simple questions I can't answer.

At the moment I have one fixed phone socket. I has a multi socket adapter plugged into it. From the multi adapter I have:-

Extension lead to the PC.
Phone.
Phone cable from my Sky+ box.

On the end of my extension lead I have a microfilter with only the cable from the router plugged into it.

Firstly, Sky BB support said I needed a microfilter plugged into main socket and then my 'multi adapter' plugged into that.

Today I was told, by Sky BB support, that the router should be plugged into the microfilter in the main phone socket and not into the microfilter on the end of an extansion lead.

I have been having lost internet connections (although router lights still correctly lit) and, worst of all, I can't get my PC and YD to remember each other (see my post in NON DIVING bits (PLEASE!!!! ).

I have removed IE7 and gone back to IE6. I have downloaded a standalone 'cookie viewer' and can see info per the attached file.

This is driving me nuts!!!! I have stopped the McAfee program and have dropped all IE settings as low as I can .......................

Change the orange to a red colour and add a hair and I look like .

I am having terrible trouble with my broadband too, so this might be the blind leading the blind.....but:

How many microfilters have you got?

If you plug a microfilter into the extension lead and then the router into this then this should be ok BUT I think you will need to put a microfilter before the phone AS WELL.............

and any other devices that get their signals directly from your main telephone socket....this is probably why someone suggested that you make the filter the first item out of the socket.

Any use?

David.

That's what I am doing at the moment.

I have 3 problems:-

1. Web connections keep dropping after a while - maybe I have a 'disconnect after ?? minutes inactivity' but tthat doesn't make sense with a BB account.

2. My PC now accoasionally freezes and I have to do 'power off' reset.

3. Sites that I use frequently keep asking me to login again - a real PITA.

I am going to wait to get reregistered onto the Sky web site before I worry any more about the problem. I am fed up of rebooting and typing in my login info.

How is your Router connected to your computer? Is it USB or Ethernet? Ethernet is better as you shouldnt have to do any real config to your pooter.

I know it's a pain in the backside but if you can set your PC up by your phone socket, remove your multi adapter and phone and just plug in a microfilter and then your router and see what happens. If you are a long way from the telephone exchange the extension lead could be throwing the line out of operating tollerances (although i doubt it).

Also check your internet options (Tools > options and select the 'connections tab') and remove any old dial up connections. If you are using ethernet connection ensure it is set to 'never dial a connection'.

I intially used an extension lead with a microfilter in the end with no problems as all the filter does is provide you with the correct plug type for your router cable.

That would be a major PITA - we have a very small bungalow and ....... PC is in a corner in one room with cables behind furniture and phone socket is in another room.

I have a new PC so the BB set up is the only connection set up on this PC. I will try it without anything else plugged into the phone socket but ...........

Thanks for the tips. I wondered if there was a setting in TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>ADVANCED that needed changing...............

I will phone Dell up on Monday + I'll have another troll round the net tonight but it is exceptionally annoying to say the least. Sometimes, after I've made/edited a post my log in details seem to be retined temporarily and then shortly after my internet connection is lost and when I [F5] refresh I'm back to username/PW before every post!

losing the logged-in status sounds like a problem on the PC, rather than BB itself.

Have you checked the PC for viruses/spyware?
What firewall software (if any) is running?

in terms of losing connections etc, have you tried it with all other telephone devices not plugged in?
The line REN (ringer equivalent number) is for a maximum of 4 devices, i.e. there's enough voltage to drive 4 bells on 4 handsets, but some analogue devices have a higher REN. Try it without anything else to see if that's the issue.

If you're dropping connections, it may be a signal quality issue or settings in your broadband modem not being optimised for the connection speed.

Has the router/modem all configured automatically or did you need to manually input any information from the BB supplier?

I agree that it is unlikely to be the BB itself but wondered if htere were any settings elsewhere on the PC (outside of IE) that could affect things.

I have Windows Firewall switched off and am running McAfee

No, I haven't tried that yet.

It was a self install program and then 2 calls to support to change some connection settings.

I have logged onto UK Divers on my home PC and things are worse than with YD in that my login info is lost immediately.

I logged onto SWM and have no problems whatsoever.

It's confusing the hell out of me. It would seem that different forums can have different requirements and .......................

From what you have written, I think Sky have been making this unnecessarily confusing for you!!

What do your filters look like? Do they have two sockets or just one?

If they have two - this is a splitter which filters out to high frequency broadband signal form the voice data. The ADSL router needs to be plugged in to the unfiltered socket on the splitter - probably labelled ADSL, and the phone/Sky box into the other.

If there is only one socket on the filter (i.e. it's a simple filter not a splitter), you only need to plug the phone/sky box into this - not the ADSL router.

Hope this makes sense!
