Why am I not diving this weekend....Cos the World needs geeks!

Well I got called into this local charity on Friday. Seems a helpful volunteer decided to try and plug in a Domain Controller to their Small Business Server network. It did not work first time so he started messing with stuff he knew nothing about. As is the way with these things shortly afterwards 8 staff get sent home because everything has stopped working. And of course they really, really, really need it back in operation Monday morning.

You know it's bad when the Admin account gets access denied!

I just love these jobs. It's like walking in after the bomb has exploded.

So today I have managed to hack into the admin account. Manually re-entered the AD DNS records. Re-mounted the Exchange store. Dumped the mailboxes to PSTs. Dumped out the user accounts. Copied off the data files. Noted the IP settings. Backed up all the web site configs. Reset the WINS and DHCP dbs. Got ESM going on a virtual machine and noted all the Exchange settings. Written down all the passwords. Dumped another set of PSTs from Outlook.

So now wish me luck for the time has come....

Usually at 3am when an Exchange server gets hosed by a lightning strike in Sydney, Australia and you're having to do it all remotely, and you have 50-odd people twiddling their thumbs until you get it all back online

Thank god I work for a predominantly European company now, who have heard of disaster recovery, UPS's and VMWare

Your lucky, i get the worst of both worlds. I work with medical software and Doctors enough to make you scream in so many ways.
