IE help pleeeeeeeeeeze

Lucky old me has a shite laptop (work). I have no IT support (down to the factt hat I probably know more than the rest of the staff about the inside of a computer. As a consequence, when it goes wrong, I have no-one to come and fix it.

Todays problem is this...

I can connect to the internet with either Broadband or wireless with no problem whatsoever. I can access Outlook and download emails. However, no matter what I do, IE won't accept the fact that I am connected to the internet and therefore won't communicate with the web. I haven't changed any settings and it worked perfectly the other day.

Any ideas anyone? (otherwise I am going to have to stay on my personal PC all day and get no work done!)

I had a similar problem with Firefox on the (Works) pool Laptop the other week...

If you have a firewall installed, check that IE is still allowed through...
Check that the Proxy settings haven't changed.
Check that the laptop is looking for the correct gateway and DCHP and DNS servers (or that the static values are set correctly...)

...err can't think of anything else at the moment...

Andrew

Can't be that, otherwise email wouldn't work.

Have you got 'working offline' set? (File menu)

cheers,
Paul

Why will it be configured to use a proxy? Not all companies use them.

Yes, IE is still allowed through
I don't know what the proxy settings should be so I don't know if they have changed
I have no clue what the third one means

Nope...that was the first thing I checked, as IE won't reconise that it is connected, so it keeps asking me to connect to a connection that it is already connected to.

Can you set IE to 'never dial a connection'?

Have you tried clicking "connect" even though you know it is already connected? I had a similar issue where IE/Firefox (can't remember which) was trying to use a different connection.... but by clicking "connect" it decided to sort itself out!

It isn't connected to any network, as I work at home. Sorry - it is owned by them but I have to do all the maintenance.
Anyway, I went to that bit, and ticked the 'automatically detect' box and hey presto, i can now get on with the work!
Thanks guys

2 things, if your IE is not working how are you having this conversation?

Have you tried installing Firefox. In going through the install process you may get the right setting in that way. Gives you time to do youir work and then resolve the IE thing later. If that doesnt work then you know that the configuration thats wrong is not specifically with IE but at a network level.
