BT Broadband Upload Speeds?

I have an Option 2 BT BB account and regularily get 6-7Mb/s download speeds but I have recently tried to upload nearly 400Mb of images for a wedding gallery and it has taken a couple of days of buggering around (main issues were FF and java, IE7 worked much better unfortunately ).

Anyway, I thought I would do a speed test and I only get 0.4Mbs upload speed. I looked on the BT site and there isn't anything about upload speeds, what do others get with BT and other ISPs?

Regards.

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

Upload with most ISPs is around half a meg typically. I don't think this is unusual, sorry.

Yes, this is typical. Before it all fell under the general tag of broadband you used to get cable and ADSL. Typically you will have an ADSL line. This is Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line. The Asynchronous part refers to the different upload and download speeds or, rather, the fact the the upload and download speeds are not the same.

Cheers/Nic

I knew that ADSL was different up and down, but I thought that when the download speed got better, the upload followed suit, but not to the same extent.

If you're on the up to 8Mb service (ADSL Max) you will get either up to 448k upload on a Standard Line - Home/SOHO connection (or up to 832k if your on a business line - Max Premium). The contention is based upon the class of service i.e. business traffic takes priority over home user

If you have traditional ADSL 1Mb/2Mb service you will get 256k upload.

ADSL Max - What speed can I expect?
Performance will be related to line length and quality. As a guide, any customer
currently able to receive a 2Mbps service should see an increase in performance, with 42% of lines being able to deliver 6Mbps or greater and 78% of lines capable of 4Mbps. Actual download speeds have a maximum possible speed of 7150kbps.

Please note that performance may vary due to the nature of the technology. Below is a summary of anticipated performance based on line rate:

Line rate / Anticipated download performance range
288Kb / 100 – 250Kb
288 – 576Kb / 100 – 500Kb
576 – 1152 Kb / 200 – 1000Kb
1152 – 2272 Kb / 400 – 2000Kb
2272 – 8128Kb / 800 – 7150Kb
NB – Upload speed ranges from 67Kb minimum to 448Kb (Max Standard) or 832Kb (Max Premium)

Yes. There's only a given amount of bandwidth and the down channel gets the lion's share.

This is the A is ADSL.

I just moved some web sites to a new provider (Yea! We are finally free of Vodahost's answer-bot approach to tech support on problems they caused) and it took 21 hours to FTP it all up from home but most of that was overnight so I didn't care.

You could always try one of the ADSL2+ providers eg Bulldog, Be etc. I get 16 Meg down and 1 Meg up on Bulldog. Not a massive difference I know..
