Help! desktop doesnt boot properly

I get to page that says windows didnt boot properly, would you like to go safe mode, last known good settings etc.

all the options just lead to my PC hanging.

i can enter my BIOS, no errors detected etc.

sometimes it goes into windows login page but just crashes when I select my user account.

I havent dont anything to my PC, it was working fine then when I got back home booted it up and it didnt work.

all the connections are in, i checked.

I suspect it might be a loose gfx card connection but its in securely already, i have had a similar problem before with my old gfx card but it went away when I got a new card.

don't know what OS you're running, but it would appear you have a couple of options.

It is unlikely that hardware would unseat itself unless you have been moving the computer around or have dropped it. Some hardware could have failed, i doubt it's the gfx though as it's working and if it was a driver problem you would still be able to boot in safe mode

I would start by trying with a boot disk, and running some tests (scan disk, pc check etc) on the hard drive, it sounds like it might have a corrupt segment, if it has it needs replacing, install a new drive, then ut the old drive in as a slave and see what data you can get off.

If you can't do this or it doesn't show any problems i would try a repair install of the OS, set the bios to boot from optical drive and put your Windows CD in, then follow the instructions on the screen to repair your windiws installation

HTH

thanks,

windows XP SP2

well, i well and truly shafted it.

I took the gfx card out and cleaned the socket put it back in.

2 errors

1 - ram module = fried or incorrectly seated, I removed it too lazy to put it bac

2 - OS now corrupted.

I cant even fix the stupid OS repair thingy because I dont have a floppy drive and all my HDDs are SATA therefore requiring a driver before the XP CD will recognise it.

will probably borrow a Floppy disk drive from work hopefully.

bloody annoyed with this PC, does everything I want but every once in a while it just freaking dies. piece of crap.
