Thanks for all the replies.

No real standard there then

I think, as it is a b2b website, I should be alright with 1024 * 768.

There will be so much wasted space on a 1600 * 1200 screen if I contain it at 800 * 600.

Thanks again.

David.

Actually it's best to stick with the semi-standard 800px fixed width, well 728px (as this is the max advertising banner width) with some pretty outline on the sides. Kind of like what I've done here Cardiff Scuba .

I was reading some research done the other day which says that people with bigger monitors don't tend to use full screen for application windows once you get above a certail screen-size/resolution combo. People then start working in several open windows at once placed in various areas of the screen.

Don't worry about designing down for PDA's and mobiles, simply apply a stylesheet specifically for them instead.

Any questions I'm happy to help, Lloyd.

So don't make it a fixed width website. You can lay it out such that it will look o.k. at 800x600 (or whatever minimum you choose), but by leaving the main content without a fixed width (either don't specify it or use a percentage width) it will automatically scale to whatever screen size is used.

No I use a PC with a great Graphics Card. I do use ALL the screen too, as my job is in CAD.

Size on this one is 1280x1024 but I tend not to run anything full screen. I need the thing I'm waiting for poking round the side so I know when to get back to work...

You're on a looser trying to standardise things. I use the PDA quite a lot and that's 480x640 and, of course, Teddy is straight out of the pram if your site doesn't work on that.

When I started making websites I used 640x480 and 16 colours for vga users. Times change. 1024x768 will now cover almost all users. There's nothing worse than viewing website that uses a low res when you don't.
