Broadband Download speed test

Seen this on telly earlier, it tests your broadband speed, I'm with Sky and we are supposed to be getting Upto 8Mb of speed,

but we are actually getting less than 10% of this quoted speed at, 0.775 Mb, and Upload is 0.344 Mb

I'm sure this does'nt make a difference but our computer is less than 4 months old, and runs Vista quite smoothly, so it's not a clapped out old thing.

Do I have the slowest comp on YD ?

what Download speed are you getting ? What Upload speed are you getting ?

Which provider ?

How much per month ?

Mine is download 1.92Mb which is good as its advertised to be 2Mb
Upload is slightly worse than promised at 192Kb instead of 256Kb but for a cheapish internet supplier, I am quite surprised

currently at 3163kbs download and 390 upload. Currently on wifi of hotel remote corner of north east portugal. Wonderful thing the internet nwdays..

I'm getting

according to the speedtest.net test.

Remember your speed is limited by contention as well as distance from the exchange. Sky broadband is known to be quite heavily contended - all ADSL providers are. If you try the test at a non peak period you will get better results, but you may never get the 8Mb unless you are pretty close to the exchange.

Cable is different to adsl because it has a lower contention ratio - and the equivalent to an exchange on cable is the cabinet usually at the end of the street, so distance works in cable's favour as well.

im getting 1954 and 191 but it is half past midnight, i'll give it a go when all the kids in the street are downloading crap (i mean doing their homework)

Speed typically depends on distance from the exchange and the amount of copper in the way.
I use talktalk from carphone wharehouse
£21/month gets me line rental,
unlimited local and national landline calls
Unlimited international calls to certain countries inc Aus, US and Europe
plus broadband which when I just tested was
5Mb download and 400kb upload

I am very happy with the service I get too.

I have been told by Plusnet that I am on the end of an acceptable signal and although it can provide a service it is likely to be less than the 2meg available. In tests it used to be around 900kbs last year, but this year it is less than half of that at around 400kbs. I can only assume the BT line is getting to capacity and this is going to be the same with any provider, so not worth swaping.

I tried it on both the above links... got similar results... just to see if it was consistent over the sites...

supposed to get 'upto' 8mb....
