I've had a Philips 42" Plasma tv for about four years and I wouldn't change it for an HD LCD tv. It's not HD ready but it is an HD 1280x1024 display with pixel plus so my upscalling DVD player looks like HD and most freeview tv programs look like HD. It's a really impressive picture.

I've had my eye on those OLED tellies and I think that will be the way to go next time or another HD ready plasma rather than LCD.

Cheers,

Mark.

so,

we are coming to the conclusion (i want larger than 32" ) that plasma is this territory, and a 1080p resolution is way more than enough.

Right - so what sort of prices can i get 1080p tv's for? and seen as 1080i is wanging its way around all the stores - where can i get a 1080p from aswel?

I have just gone through this and ended up with LCD.

I bought a 42" Phillips Ambilight, it has 1080p, 7500:1 contrast, 3 HDMI sockets and the Ambilight feature is awesome when playing games. Makes the game feel 6 foot wide!

It's similar to the one below;

Philips 42PF9831 Lcd Tv - Review 5/5

It was in the shop sat next to a Samsung plasma, the same size and price, and the Philips knocked the socks off it.

hope this helps

Just been through this and I work in the HD TV industry. I went for the Sony Bravia W3000 LCD 40inch. It is a fantastic picture in both HD and SD.

A better buy would have been the Sony X3500 but could not justify the extra at the moment. Do not wait for the OLED or new CRT technology as this is around 2-3 years away for the sizes you want at an affordable price.

There are some good deals at the moment. I got a Blue ray Player with my TV for £50, many are giving away PS3's. I have sky HD which looks great but a major consideration is the way it looks with SD pictures as well.

Up scalled DVDs with the Blue Ray player also loo great.

Plasmas are OK. There are some decent ones out there. But I oipted for a 1080p 24hz capable LCD. Be careful as there are a lot of people will give you bad advice especially in the shops.

See here for a good source of equipment that has been tested and reviewed by an independant person

I was torn between a Sony Bravia and the Philips, but decided on the Philips. The Sony was good, and had I not had a bad experience with a Sony in the past (5 replacment TVs in less than a year, gave up in the end!) I may well have gone for that. The Ambilight was the nail in the coffin though!

No I do not work for Sony, But after reading back my thread I can see why you could think this lol. I work with all the HD technology for Broadcasters. I have been around HD for the last 6 or 7 years (yes I know it has only been transmitted in this country for a short period) but parts ofthe broadcast industry have been working in HD formats right up past the 720p 1080i formats for years. Even up to 2k and 4K resolutions
