Missing codec's in windows media

I have downloaded a tv show which i have tried playing in windows media. When I tried to play it it came up with an error saying that I am missing one or more codecs, when I go to the web site there is a long list of codec but I have no idea which ones I need.

The file is a .avi which I thought windows media could play.

Many thanks.

Grab yourself a copy of this and install, that should solve any codecs issues you have.

Codec Pack Standard

You dont normally need codec packs, some are a little iffy, but ffdshow should do what you need. if you look at it use the latest "tryouts"

SourceForge.net: ffdshow tryouts

If you are using Vista media center then it might be worth installing vista media center control plugin which gives you a good level of control over the playback It also gives ffw/rewind for divx/xvids which you dont have normally.

Welcome to the Media Control Plugin Site.

Hope this helps

Get VLC Media Player - free, safe and plays pretty well anything! Recommended for "got this off the net" videos...

And if they fail, then the XP Codec Pack (xpcodecpack.com) and Dscaler (I cannot remember the site that came from) will solve the problem between them.

Second recommendation for VLC.

When i used windows i only ever used two players. VLC and Media Player Classic. Definetly try ffdshow, or maybe get a codec pack.

But in reality, ffdshow, ac3, morgan stream switcher, matroska and vobsub are all the codecs you will need to view downloaded .avi files. They tend to either encode them using XviD and MP3/AC3, or a lately x264 HD with AC3 sound encased in .mkv (matroska) containers. Basically if the file size is 700MB or less it will probably be XviD, If over 1GB then x264.

VideoLAN - Free Software and Open Source video streaming solution for every OS! - VLC
SourceForge.net: guliverkli - Media Player Classic/vobsub

SourceForge.net: ffdshow tryouts
Matroska
