What am I loooking at for a rebuild, or would I be best forking out the £69 for Norton to sort it out online?

Nick,

Best I can think of is that you right click on the "Your infected" box and click properties and find the name of the file?
This should give you a name to google and hopefully find a solution, as there a lot of different Malwares that do the same "Your infected" box, pop up.

This might help in the mean while?:-

Another vote for lavasoft - Adaware
Gets rid of loads of stuff you didnt know was there and your PC speeds up.

Ad-Aware @ Lavasoft - The Original Anti-Spyware Company - Lavasoft

Use the free download

It's also a good idea to get to know the applications on your task manager.
You can usually tell then when things are not right.

Try A-Squared. It has got rid of more hard to shift things on computers i've been repairing, then any of the others. It is free as well. Spybot comes in at a close second.

To do the repair you need to get windows started in Safe Mode without networking. Be sure to disable networking asap, as the infection could be logging your bank details, etc, and sending them to someone.

If you are going to look at dodgy sites, dont do it with IE. Firefox with noscript installed is the best way to browse any site. Then you get to choose if you want to allow javascript and plugins like flash.

Links.

a-squared Free (formerly a² free) Freeware! A2 is a free of charge Anti-Trojan, Anti-Worm, Anti-Dialer and Anti-Spyware Software - optimal protection
The home of Spybot-S&D!

Also if you are considering buying an Antivirus/AntiSpyware/NetSec App, then look at Eset's Smart Security Home Edition. Its what i recommend to people who are buying packages. It has a good reputation, and it doesnt eat resources like Mcafee/Norton.

It’s installing the operating system, from scratch, Lavasoft products will not get rid of it. As someone suggested find the file name and do a Google that may help. I find it easier just to install the operating system. If you have only one drive i.e. the C:\ drive you will need to save any data, when ever I build a PC I always add another partition and the C: drive holds the operating system and the D: is the data and application drive. That way is a piece of pi$$ to rebuild and you never loose any data.

Don't change anything. It'll cost you time and effort and some of the assertions that x is better than y are just plain wrong. Doing a rebuild is almost certainly the wrong thing to do. No offence to the chaps that have suggested it of course

When you next get the pop up get a copy of it. You can get a screen shot using the Print Screen button which will put a copy on the clipboard. (If you use alt-print screen you'll just get the highlighted window). Make the screenshot into a picture and post it here. Then we'll know what you have caught. The nice people at Symantec (they make Norton) have guides of how to get rid of the trojan for free if you tell them what it is. You aren't the first to catch this and they really have seen it before.

Try this:-

TrendSecure | TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Overview

It is a really good program but make sure you only get rid of things specifically related to your trojan and don't get rid of things you want.

It is quick and will present you with a long list of items graded by "potential danger". Check see if you trojan is on the list.

I forget, did you find the name of this Trojan/Spyware yet?
