Vodafone Data Card

Those of you who have a Vodafone Data Card, be careful. (I know of at least two of you!)

Unlimited data comes with a fair usage policy, and they will charge you if you use over 200Mb a month (yes, 200Mb a month) and it seems up to £4.50 per Mb downloaded if they want to 200Mb isn't alot (20 songs on iTunes+ for example)

This guy was on a phone tarriff but he got caught out...

Don't panic!

That case was using a mobile phone as a modem.

The old datacards ---- Had a limit and are expensive to exceed

The newer mobile broadband are unlimited, I often hit 500mb or more on the mobile 3g card..... unless you use them abroad......then you will need to sell a vital organ

So, upgrade

Sorry - yes, I reread what I'd written and realised it was slightly misleading.

*some* of the newer mobile broadband are unlimited. Unfortunately the vodafone ones aren't AFAIK

I have an iPhone and it definitely has unlimited data which is cool, and my Orange 3G SIM which goes in the WWAN card in my Dell lappy is also Unlimited, but there is a soft cap of something like 2Gb.

I was using vodafone mobile broadband, and it is unlimited (to a certain extent I am sure, gigabites of download will probably raise eyebrows)

GPRS with EDGE is OK, but there's hardly any EDGE coverage in the UK unfortunately. And I only ever seem to get about 200k on an EDGE connection anyway. And TBH, the biggest problem with 3G on a phone is that it drops calls left right and centre. I disabled 3G on my old Sony Ericsson because it was just too darned unreliable on call stability.

It would have been nice with 3G but I can see why they left it off. However, it still needs work doing on it - Safari is dreadfully unreliable and drops off on a regular basis, and there's basic functionality missing (like forwarding of TXT messages, or MMS for example). I can't jailbreak mine unfortunately cos its 1.1.2

The one thing it does come free with is free 'The Cloud' wifi access - which came into its own when I went to London recently - everywhere seems to have cloud access, and the City of London is flood-covered. Wherever I went near Liverpool Street, I was on 3Mb Wifi which was great

That also works in nearly every McDonalds, so if I park near to one I can hop onto their Wifi too.

I feel dirty. but my original point was to make sure those who have Voda Data Cards aren't going to get stung where they least expect it...

Just to join the geeky conversation...Mark, where did you get the 'unlimited' 3G sim from. I use my TyTyn II for a fair bit of data use and when I spoke to Orange about matching the T-Mobile unlimited data usage they said they couldn't match that.

I would be interested in seeing what you have so that I can go back to Orange and ask them politely to sort their sh*t out

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

It was part of the contract we negotiated for work - 2000 mobiles and 40 3G data cards, and we got a free APN too (so I can force office workers through the internal security vs having them directly surfing the net).

I'm not sure it can be arranged on a personal tarriff - but I'm not impressed with Orange's 3G service - HSDPA is patchy at best - I think the O2 3G service is much better and faster (and they definitely do an unlimited data on personal tarriff).

As you say, though, one of Orange's sales ploys is to match any tarriff on any other network, so they are playing silly buggers if they can't match the unlimited data on either O2 or T-Mobile...

Thanks Mark. I will try their sales guys again. I am already a premier customer as I spend so much with them

I haven't noticed the lack of 3G coverage that much, the PDA rendering of webpages is the part which I think slows down the experience Pocket IE is pants and Mini opera is coming along but there are still bits that need to be improved like pasting a link into the address bar
