Wireless Network / Vista

I have been trying to set up a wireless network for a colleague without too much success. This is the setup:

Study: PC running XP ; NTL cable modem ; D-Link wireless router (DI-524)
Back room: PC running Vista

I have set up the wireless network, it is visble and I can connect to it using the wireless on my mobile phone. I am unable to connect from the Vista machine The network is visble and signal strength is showing as excellent but I get an error saying that no response was received from the wireless router. Windows diagnosis suggestes poor signal strength yet this doesn't seem to be the case. I plan to go back with my laptop which has wireless and is running XP as I think the problem is something to do with Vista. Short of phoning the Dell helpline, who supplied the Vista PC and the wireless router, can anyone give me any sensible advice?

Cheers/Nic

Afraid I don't know anything about Vista, but i'd be checking the router for:
MAC (device) access list
encryption
DHCP (got a big enough address pool?)
Got a conflict on the channel with a neighbour?

cheers,
Paul

Don't think this is restricted as I can connect my mobile.

Good call. I think it is OK but certainly worth checking.

Again, I don't think so as I could connect my mobile. Unless they are not broadcasting the SSID then there are no other networks in range. It's easy enough to change the chennel though so will give it a try.

I'm not sure if it is relevant but IPv4 and IPv6 are both enabled on the Vista machine.

Cheers/Nic

This is what I am thinking. I will check it out.

Can you try a wired connection first? Might help you narrow down from a wireless issue to a more generic networking/security issue.

Unless you have one problem masking another

Not really, it's too far away to sensibly route a cable. If it could be done that way we wouldn't need the wireless network

Found this:
Windows Vista cannot obtain an IP address from certain routers or from certain non-Microsoft DHCP servers

You could also try assigning a static ip address.

cheers,
Paul

Nic,

Turn off IPv6 unless you need it. With it enabled the machine will run like a dog.

...and get rid of WEP-128 bit as its utterly worthless. You need WPA.
