If an American one is too much money, have a look for one of the other imports in terms of Quality, they should be
American
Japanese
Mexican
Chinese

to be honest, I've got a Chinese one that I've had for about 11 years, but I did put some better quality pickups on it when I got it,
I've played the American ones, and as far as tone goes, there's not much difference.
