1,000 kilo's in a mega. 8 bits in a byte

20 Mbps (megabits per second) =

20,000 Kbps (kilo bits per second)

or

2,500 KBps (kilo Bytes per second)

.....on a dry day, with no electrical items within 20 miles of you and the server you are downloading from is in the exchange[1]

Most broadband providers describe their service as "up to x Mb" and it varies massively with proximity to the exchange.

176kbps does seem low though....

Mal

[1] I am guessing it's broadband you are querying

Must be cable though, IIRC phone will only get to 8mbits next to the exchange.

I find that speed is much improved by mounting the modem/router upside-down

Hi,

Have a look on Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to test your connection, also you can change the format of the results to something you can relate to.
Bear in mind when Broadband companies spout on about 20meg line for example, they are referring to MegaBITS and not MegaBYTES. So this figure has to be divided by 8 to have any relavance as file sizes (MP3's, JPEG's, WMV's, AVI's etc) are generally given in KiloBYTES, megaBYTES etc etc .
That and speeds advertised are maximum available as has been said. Time of day for when you test/download will also influence any results.
