| I got my regular emailed copy of the Maplins catalogue today. This is now down to £79.99. Has anyone got one? Is it worth dusting off my records (which includes all sorts of magical music Is it a gimmick? What do you reckon? A USB turntable, or a new stage cylinder?

These USB turntables are'nt very good quality. They'll get a representation of your vinyl onto disc, but if you want any degree of quality they're not the way to go. (But they are cheap.) Here are some potentially useful links: Download sound recorder and dvd creator software, save cassette to cd & lp to CD; video to DVD Griffin Technology: iMic Wave Repair And the thread where they came from: Putting LPs onto CD? You'll get an idea from it... |

I have had one for about a year now. Great piece of kit if you are looking to transfer your vinyl into an electronic format. If however you are buying one to simple play your vinyl then you whole be better spending the money on a better quality turntable. Steve |

| I got an acoustic solutions turntable from argos after reading the richer sounds and what hi-fi reviews after my 17 year old pioneer system finally gave up the ghost. its a good quality turntable and i didn't realise it had USB capability- learn to read reviews properly instead of skimming- hooked it up to PC and wahey crackles and pops on MP3, music as it was meant to sound. cost was £79 in the sale.

| Decent turntable, decent mixer, soundcard with SP/DIF input and a program to record to your hardisk will get you the best results. I use one of my Technics SL1210's, a numark DJ mixer, an M-Audio 2496 soundcard and record into Cubase SX2 or Soundforge 6. Record as .wav or AIFF first then compress to mp3 if thats what you want. No a cheap option as this kit is used in my studio set up and DJ set up but it gets perfect results for recording vinyl. |

| I put a M Audio sound card (M-AUDIO - PCI interfaces) in my PC, hooked it up to the HiFi that already has a good turntable then use Exact Audio Copy (freeware Introduction » Exact Audio Copy) to record my records and transfer them to a music server (Building a Mini-ITX Server). The server is linked to a squeezbox (Squeezebox Wireless Digital Media Player: Listen to the music you love in any room in your home) connected to the HiFi . So far all my CDs and half my records are on the server, no more round bits of plastic in the living room! |
