| How to close a Com port on a laptop. Whilst trying to unlock my Nokia 6630, I managed to open com port 8 (com8) on my laptop, however the program crashed without exiting properly, and now Com8 appears to be stuck open. Is there any way I can force it to shut (from the DOS prompt maybe? I've looked in the device manager, but com8 isn't listed. Cheers Darren

| Assuming its a USB cable, com port emulator. Sounds like it's a driver / software problem. Its unusal for a laptop to have more than one physical com port, hence yout won't see anything at bios level. Check the windows device manager and potentially just hit delete on the port. Davie

| Ports are opened by the software which require them. Normally they are closed when the software is shut down/exited. If the software crashed it is concievable that a reference to com 8 has been left orphaned in the registry. Windows will might then open the unrequired port. I'd try Registry Mechanic or similar. Or search the registry (regedit) for references to com 8 and trace it from there. I just love deleting bits of registry Paul |

Registry data is a bit like Brain matter, you can carve great chunks out without ever noticing a change. On the other hand it can be devastating I must admit that I have deleted nasties from the registry quite regularly. Single registry values are quite often clearly associated with a single function. Even if you delete/edit the wrong thing it rarely causes great harm. I never killed my puter yet!! It's your call Paul |
