I use AVG but have the paid for version, the good news is that I got a very good deal from them for 3 licences which worked out at about £10/year/machine. Excellent value only down side is that it is a little slow to boot up.

in addition to the antivirus, AVG do a free antispyware, but its true that neither are easy to find on the site

Zonelabs do a free firewall, which is very good, better than the windows one I think....

firefox is more secure than IE, and much nicer to use

Yep - that was specifically recommended to me by our IT bloke at work - my employers use Norton but he reckons Avast is better......don't ask me, I'm just a ratcatcher!

My sons both have Avast on their machines and have had no problems with it.

Antivirus = AVG Free
Firewall = Zonealarm Free
Browser = Opera (knocks both IE and Firefox out cold with security )
Adware = Adaware SE
Spyware = Spybot S+D
Track Cleaner = CCleaner

All free, I used to be a Norton user but it got more and more bloated and slowed the computer down more every new version, got all these for free and they seem to work OK (according to online checks with Norton and McAfee) and the computer runs quicker then with Norton or McAfee.

AVG is nice as a freebee AV, but for best value, BitDefender Pro 2008 get my vote. £30 for a three user license has to be good.

I've been using BitDefender for 4yrs now and nver had a problem, it has very good write up too.
