Replacement internal drive for Acer Laptop - IDE or SATA II

I have a warning coming up about the primary drive in my Acer laptop about to fail and I obviously want to replace it.

The current drive is 80Gb and I want to get a bigger one. Looking at Amazon I can pick up a 160Gb Hitachi for £31 which is IDE or a Generic 160Gb SATAII for £47.55.

What are the differences and does it make a difference?

Next question, best software to mirror the drives?

Son, you're going to have to make up your mind about growing up and becoming aircrew. You can't do both.

The aircraft limits are only there in case there is another flight by that particular aircraft. If subsequent flights do not appear likely, there are no limits.

SATA and IDE have a different connector and work in a different way (SATA is serial and IDE is parallel). You need to find out which type your old one is and replace it with the same type.

Chances are yours will be an IDE in an Acer, I know mine is.

As fro cloning software, dunno, I've been trying a few out on my desktop which is about to fail. So far I've failed with Acronis true image, Norton Ghost and another one which I can't remember. I've also just got a copy of Clonezilla, but I need to try that yet.

Green waiting for anyone who can come up with a solution that works.

yes. it does.

you will need to check whether the motherboard in your laptop supports SATA or not.. (a simple check on your make/model number should tell you) I should imagine not.

There is a good explanation here of the technology

Why, are you moving soon?

I'll have a look tonight when I get home and go from there.

No suggestions on the cloning software then?

The second link didn't work

I would rather have a personal recommendation than try loads of pieces of software that don't work hence asking here

I used to use Power Quest until Symantec bought them out.

I now use oneof the Acronis professional products and very good it is to.

I am pretty sure the home demo version software is fully functional and can be used for a one off - but check the documentation.

I've successfully used ghost to clone one drive to another - I had a laptop and a new larger HDD in a drive bay and managed to clone disk to disk without any problems.

Thanks Matt and Martin. My new IDE 160Gb drive arrives this weekend so hopefully the old drive will last until then and I can have a play.
