Wireless broad band questions

Hey chaps, use a HP laptop, with orange wireless. Have the feeling its wep. Is there an idiots guide to checking and changing to the safer protocol.

Here's what I did, and I am a techno numpty.

1. Go into the security settings on the laptop, particularly those pertaining to the wireless settings.
2. Change that to the one you want
3. Assign it a password
4. Connect to wireless router using a network cable
5. Go to the IP address for the router
6. Change the security in that to the same as the laptop
7. give it the same password
8. restart the router (might not be necessary)
9. connect without the network cable.
