| Have a look at this site for an eBook that may help. Avontra Online Sales It's for Solaris 9, but will give the basics. Things that are new in 10 that are worth knowing about. Zones and Containers. Kind of like VMWARE meets a chroot jail. Nice for trying stuff out in, without the overhead of multiple installations of Solaris. ZFS. A huge leap forward in terms of filesystems over UFS. One to read up about. Brendan Gregg's Homepage is a good jump off point for the above two. Also Dtrace to find out what is happening is worth a look too. If you end up liking Solaris, don't forget you can download it for the Intel box if you want. Paul |

| Ultra 30 Keith, the ultra 30's a little old in the tooth now - esp. if your considering solaris 10 on the thing. In it's day a cracking little workstation though. Personally i'd get a copy of solaris 8 (i have a copy i'd image for you). IFAIC Solaris is really good - not cutting or bleeding edge like linux mind - but stable and dependable. with good support if you need it too. you could if you wanted get a sparc version of linux or FreeBSD and install that on there too. nick |
