Advice req PC Vs MAC (laymans terms)

I think what Dan is referring to is the effect of Macs going from PowerPc to Intel chips. Its not because PCs are more powerful but because Macs are now using the same chip as windows they lost some advantages and made it easier to programme for both platforms.

Not sure if this is a wind up or not. Using the same programs as i was on my pc the mac wipes the floor with it. when using "spaces" email in one yd in another burning a disk (moody dvd ) in the third along with calender app, in the 4th using ichat to chat with my girlfriend (via video)whilst completing a quote using excel and word all open at the same time ok i'm not sure how much more i could run without it slowing noticeably but if i tried to run that lot on my windows laptop it would hang and eventually give up completely and crash. I'm far from an expert with computers but in my experience my mac makes my pc look steam driven oh and the pc is actually a higher spec on paper

I think your making a misleading comparison. Its not the fault of Windows but the hardware in your laptop giving you problems. Ok windows may use more memory but you will get a more powerful Windows computer for the same money you spend on an Apple that will do all things you mention and more.

The key advantage of Apple is user friendly tasks.

The laptop was almost new faster processor and more ram hp so not a crap make either for me the switch has been made and it will be a long time before i go back.

Really? What Like word/excel/powerpoint etc, along with video editing/photo editing/ music editing etc. I have all of those and then some. Don't you mean as many pointless memory hogging applications?

I know. I suppose the perfect machine would be one that did all things for all people, but one that does that seem to have a lot of failure points - any windows machine seems to suffer from this. I play my games on the dedicated machine designed for that purpose - Xbox or PS3 etc.

And that's meant to be a bad thing? LOL.....get a machine that gets virused up to the eyeballs every 10 seconds....now you are really computing!!!

And PC's many faults are dirt cheap to repair? In 7 years of PC owning I spent thousands upgrading and repairing and replacing. In 2 years of Mac ownership I have paid........nothing.It hasn't gone wrong. I know that Macs can go wrong as any other machine but of all my friends who own one I have yet to hear as many horror stories.

Really? What's this based on? I could walk you down a bunch of roads in London where Architects and designers seem to use Macs. I guess they didn't hear what you said.

You're describing a PC here. As I type this I am listening to itunes whilst watching a dvd. 3 Large processes open, not a glitch in any of them. I struggled to even do one of these things without getting a major crash or a good virus bombing on my Windoze pile of crap.

Cheap isn't always better though, and for all the problems inherent in Windows (vista anyone?)I won't be leaving Macs. Initial cost - pricey. Longevity - high. Need to upgrade soundcard/graphics card/antivirus software/any number of applications every 5 minutes when something new comes out - nope.

There are a few OS for you to use now as well if you don't like Windows

Even with my xp laptop and desktop they had problems one of the major things was having to constantly scan for viruses etc using norton at first then zonealarm . You sound a lot more experienced than me with pc's/macs but from my end user experience the mac works and works when i want it to how i want it to as an engineer i'm a big fan of things that work as expected i never ever experienced that with a pc

Ok, so I'm looking to upgrade my XP laptop to a Macbook, black and put 4gig RAM in it. I want to put VMware fusion on it so I can run my work XP based software.

What I need to know is the cheapest way to get a version of XP pro installed. I've seen an OEM version on ebuyer for 80 odd quid, Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition w/SP2c - Licence and media - 1 PC - OEM - CD - English - Ebuyer

Is this a legit way of installing XP? I have a version of the Office suite knocking around somewhere and I will need to install that to let my work stuff run. I will be using the mac software for everything else.

Really,have to disagree there completely...
I'm a freelance Cameraman/Editor, and Mac plus Final Cut Studio is fast becoming the no 1 editing platform of choice and making huge in roads into the Avid/PC market.
All broadcast/design pros i know use macs.
They just work..most of the time.
In over 3 years of almost daily use my Mac have never crashed or locked up.
