and if the author wanted you to pay for it he would hve had the sense to write a locking feature in that requires purchased code to unlock.

There's several Firefox extensions that will do this:

Free graphics software

I use faststone FastStone Image Viewer, Screen Capture, Photo Resizer ... for handling photos once I have converted them to JPEG.

It's a really fast viewer and will view RAW,JPEG etc but I use it mostly fopr batch converts of files (you can convert to a fixed size based on the longest side so all your landscape/portrait shots end up the same size.

Dead easy to use and does loads more and is free (he just aks for a donation if you like it.....and I did so I did)

If that is the justification that lets you sleep at night so be it. I can assure you it is bollox. If the author does not want you to pay, they release it under GNU or a similar license.

Copy protection is a big dilemma when it comes to writing software. On the one hand you can spend your time writing ever more complicated code to deter the thieves (because that is what you are). Or you can spend your time writing code which performs functions that are beneficial to the people that are paying you.

Here you go something I don't mind providing for free. Not very useful for most people though.

Really.

So following this logic, if petrol stations wanted me to pay then they would place a barrier across the exit to prevent me from driving off.

Not paying for software when the author requests payment is theft, pure & simple.

cheers,
Paul

Helping yourself to the products of Microsoft, adobe, or autocad is one thing. Shareware is produced by individuals or small groups. If you don't pay for it they go under. It is no different to borrowing kit from your LDC to test it and not taking it back.

Anyway a lot of the best and most imaginative software is free; take a look at Jalbum - Create and share your own photo album site. This is far and away the best web photo album generator going, takes a bit of work but is incredibly powerful.

Exactly, complete lobbolx, which is why I unreservedly retracted my glib comments in the hope that this interesting thread didn't drop into a downward spiral. Sorry again

thats going to extremes but the chances of you getting caught without a barrier are pretty good i.e. its really easy to catch you if you've done it.

chances of catching somebody downloading a peice of software and not purchasing a shareware licence are fairly remote i.e. if you do it its fairly unklikely you will get caught.

I never said it was right I said it was silly for somebody to not take reasonable measures to secure their property.

would you leave your car unlocked with the keys in the ignition or would you lock it and take the key and issue the key to peple who want to use it on payment.
