Its my understanding that without any 3rd party apps you can remote to XP pro from Vista Premium but you cannot remote from XP to Vista..

Your understanding is wrong. XP, Vista and Win7 all use the same core Remote Desktop Protocol, as does Terminal Services on Win2K, Win2K3 and Win2K8 servers. The protocol was upgraded with an SSL layer, for Vista, Win7 and Win2K8, which can be made mandatory, optional or disabled, at both client and server end. The Remote Desktop Connection 6 client application is available for XP, Win2K, Win98 and Mac OSX, so those systems can also connect to the SSL enabled RDP servers in Vista, Win7 and Win2K8.

So called Home editions of XP, Vista and Windows 7 ship with the RDP server deliberately broken by Microsoft - which is damn annoying as the people that buy home basic tend to be the ones that require remote support the most.

Got that. All perfectly simple and clear, according to Microsoft.

Polite is a value added service.

Where would you like me to send the Invoice?

    Thank you to all.

Firstly without the add on software.

I have successfully got my daughter (running VISTA home premium) to request my (running XP Pro) assistance. So now I have fixed her printer etc.

So do I understand that if was to request a connection for her to assist me, it would not work, without the extra software being loaded?

I have found the MS words unclear.
    Thanks again to all.
