So,just what is DIR?

In the above post,Andrew asked what DIR is.This question arises an awful lot whenever the topic is discussed.Daz's answer certainly sums it up,there will no doubt somebody willing to add,question or pig around with his summary,but to be honest,it's accurate enough.I've got a couple of links to read that will build upon that description for those wishing to know more,("oldies" may have seen them before)!Further knowledge can then be gleaned from various sources eg.the DIS-UK site,here maybe(honestly!)and at least people can have a decent knowledge base to start from.
DIR is well worth the effort of some research,which,in itself will encourage/expose divers towards safer practices and thinking about their diving whether or not they follow the system rigidly.Whatever, please do not fall under the immpresion that it is the "only" way to do things safely.

Also, for those newer to diving perhaps we could have one or two "sticky posts" (as they are called on other forums) where commonly referred to information remains on a forum in a locked post, I'm thinking particularly of the bewildering array of TLA's (Three Letter Abbreviations/Acronyms) which confront the 'newer' diver
