Question 100m+ Why do you do it?

My mate has been asked to write a short article for a German magazine on deeper diving, he specifically mentioned 100m dives. I have been asked for some input and thought it would be useful to canvass some other opinions.

I am not talking about deep wrecks here, simply a dive to 100m or more, why would/have you done it?

Personally I've only done it once and I'll freely admit it was simply to hit the number and my mate was going anyway.

Ian

to practise for wrecks that are sub 100

thats the reason why i dive to dive wrecks, it just happens that some of the best ones are below 100

although it appears that some people do it so they can post about it on internet forums and say ive done 104m!

LOL

Us Decos agree, sub 100 metres is for a wreck or a cave or a similar specific site, not just to say look at meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I must admit, my deepest dive to -124m was intended to be -132m as a celebration of my 32nd birthday. I blame DrJM as it was his idea originally and seemed like a good one

To be honest, for my other deep dives I don't tend to do work up dives, a 30m dive is not much different from a 90m dive. If I'm happy in the water on previous dives with the kit I plan on using then it doesn't bother me what the depth was. If you have the discipline to say in the water for 2-3hrs without bailing then for me deep practice isn't that relevant. Now I've started rebreather diving this may change as the dynamics are different and the cost is minimal.

Agree with above ! Normally I like to have a target eg. a wreck or something worthed to do that kind of dive. Also like to start with very limited bottom time and then work time progressivly.

Actually if your referring to Andrew and myself, we dived to 104 to see a ship wreck??? When offered another 100+ the next day to see bugger all (well a canyon) we declined and did 60 instead. It’s all in the trip report.

First time we dived to 100 it was to get to 100 and see how we felt. Strange thing is in 12/70 we felt..... errrr not a lot. We were shitting our selves the night before but once in the water and down to depth we looked at each other and both thought, “Is that it”. I don’t suppose a 30 -40m max diver who doesn’t use He will understand but there really isn’t a lot of difference between a 70m dive and a 100m dive. It’s all in the mind. If you’re comfortable being in the water and can cope with the fact you have two hours of deco ahead minimum for any reasonable bottom time you will be fine. My deep dives are deco limited and the bottom time will be in direct relation to my deco tolerance. As a result the 104m dive was 180mins run and I dived the Illinois for 180mins run time but the Illinois is only 65m.

Going past 150m is the big one as weird things start to happen (according to some of the research I have done) but I doubt if I would bother. I would do the Britannic 110-125 and I will if I get the chance before I am too old, but apart from that I am unlikely to push much past 100m as the deco to bottom time ratio becomes unbearable.

As to the question why go to 100m the answer is, why not?

ATB

mark you are interested in numbers not what you are looking at that has been evident from the look at my depth gauge posts that have been made, you have made that clear yourself
