| I think you may be a little confused here. A RB is a diving system and trimix is a gas. Its not a case of one or the other as most RB users use trimix inside them. However, if you mean "OC trimix" vs "RB trimix" then an RB is more gas efficient so your fills cost you less and you don't need to carry the same numer and size of cylinders with you (within certain limits). Which is best depends on how much mix diving you do. If you do a lot of mix diving or plan to go deep regularly then a RB may work out more cost effective in the long run.

| It all comes down to the depth at which you want to dive. Once you get much deeper than 50m you don't have much choice but to use trimix. If your only doing a few dives a year in trmix territory you are not going to save a whole lot with a rebreather. 4k buys over a 100 OC trimix fills which could account for years of OC trimix diving. If you are regularly diving Trimix RBs look attractive on the basis of gas cost, gas duration and filling logistics - a trimix fill generally costs me a 60 mile round trip on top of the gas cost. On the downside RBs are more complicated with more bits to go wrong. I know one prolific RB and gas diver that reverts to OC for dives >90m. Of course some people just like having toys to play with (nothing wrong with that). |

They are not alternatives. Both is the norm. Read almost any deep/technical diving article in the diving comics and the pictures will almost always show divers on rebreathers. Serious technical diving went rebreather years back. Quote:

| Perhaps, one interpretation of the original question is to ask tri mix divers why they remain on OC rather than switch to a rebreather?

I can't say I haven't thought about them, and I fully intend to progress to the 80-90 mtr range and beyond, my current thoughts being to continue on OC, as I just don't think the money thing stacks up and I think you buy a whole load of complexity for not enough benefit but thats a different, and often repeated debate. In my view, to get a reasonable return on investment I would expect the thing to pay back within 5 years, as then you/I would want to change/upgrade, and as I do 30 or so trimix dives a year every time I've added it up, the difference isn't significant enough to force me to change my opinion Additionally, I would still need OC kit for nitrox dives, cave dives, holiday dives etc. and so I would also have double the equipment. Nope, its more stage bottles and additional Gavin scooters for me Andy Last edited by And : 04-10-05 at 04:00 PM. |

| Hi. Nope!. I haven't heard an argument that justifies me NOT having a YBOD, walk a mile in CCR shoes before you judge.
