Question Fitting a new cylinder valve

I have just taken delivery of my nice new argon bottle. Unfortunately its in bits so I have ...

1. The bottle
2. the main body of the valve
3. a stem that appears to screw into the bottom of the valve
4. an 'O' ring.

OK, so my questions are.....

1. How tight do I screw the stem into the valve body and how? (pliers?)

2. How tight do I screw the valve into the bottle?

Thanks

John

just screw the stem in the valve base finger tight then wrap it with something to protect it ( Cloth or insulation tape and nip it up with a Pliers.

Put the "o" ring on the valve, remove the plastic or rubber knob and screw in to the top of the bottle.

Now using a bit of wood ( Not to dammage the valve) Knock the valve with a hammer and the wood between the hammed and valve to tighten the final bit.

do not dammage the spiggot the knob fits to.

Re install the knob.

Sorted.

Pretty much what G Man said but I don't like tw@tting valves with a hammer so I

Clamp a couple of blocks of wood to the valve. Then.......

Use a pair of stilsons to nip it up tight.

Big adjustable. Gentle hammer twatting. Perfect.

Question

Why does it need to be so tight?

The O-Ring does the sealing not the thread, so hand tight is plenty AFAIAC.

I dont see the need for any quantity of force let alone a LARGE spanner or a HAMMER!!!

The last one I lobbed in (a couple of nights ago) I just screwed in by hand then nipped it up with an 8" adjustable. No hammer involved at all. Nipped up to "ooo that feels about right" torque. It needs to be more than hand tight as if the cylinder gets completely drained, say for a nitrox fill, then the cylinder monkey swings it about in the shop, the valve can come loose. So nipped up, just so you need a spanner to undo it but can't undo it by hand is plenty.
