Calculating required Wing Lift

Is there any way that I can calculate the required lift needed for a wing, and what levels of safety margin would you suggest in excess of a calculated figure.

Thanks

Follow either process A or B

Process A
  • weigh seperately all the bits of kit you might use, including any extra kit such as stages you might ever use. Add this all up. don;t forget, you need to work out how much it weighs in water rather than in air, so this might be a bit tricky.
  • work out how bouyant you are in fresh water /salt water /warm water / cold water. don't forget to test what happens when your suit is flooded and include this in your calculations.
From this you can determine how positive or negative you are
If required, then add in the amount of lead you need in order to perform a weight check with all the cylinders empty
  • Add in a fudge safety factor.

Process B

Tell us what kit you plan on using and we'll tell you what wing to buy

Option B

Transpac
Twin 10l 300Bar cylinders (would go for the 12s but too heavy)
7l steel stage (possibly ali)
Worst case scenario - trilaminate dry suit, uggi, xerotherm arctics and M&S thermals, I like being warm
Current height/weight 6'2 17 stone
plus usual clutter of reel, smb, torches etc

TIA

wellllllll, normally I'd agree with you mr nackers.

But these are 300 bar twin tens and potentially steel stages. I think he needs something more like a 60lb wing.

What we really need is an expert in this sort of configuration.

Paging Mr Chase, Will a Mr Mark Chase please attend this thread....

Are you sure you will gain a weight advantage from this decision?

if he means 300 bar 10s as opposed to 300 bar 12s, then I would think that's a "yes dear, he will"

Go for 100lb wing, just to be sure

OK, only joking. Go for 232 12's, not 300 10's, and a 40-50lb wing.

232 bar 12s with a 55lb wing works great for me

Duh huh....

OK - I thought he/she meant 300bar 10s as opposed to 232bar 12s.

232 bar 12s would be the better choice really - same amount of gas, lighter tanks with better buoyancy characteristcs - and easier to get fills.
