What Dive Computer

Hi i am a trimix diver and i am looking for a nice new trimix computer

up to now i have been diving on tables as my current computer only handles nitrox. However i would like to get the added backup of a dive computer. The problem is i am not sure what computer to buy. Lots of people say diffrent things about many diffrent computers.

Im kinda leaning towards a shiny new VR3 but some people have said this may not be the best option so i figured i would post here and see what people said

im open to any ideas and documents that may lead me to make an informed decison also any links to the best place to buy would be nice.

thanks for your help
Mythic

I think before anyone answers ,the first question is are you thinking of progressing to rebreather ? If so it limits the field further

Blimey 7 hours and you still haven't had the VR3 brigade on

Don't worry just go and get a VR3, apparently it's the only computer you will ever need. Apart from all the upgrades that is - by lunch time you will have 20 posts saying just that.

No I don't have one - far too expensive for me

Well sorry Fiona but it couldn't last I have a VR£ colour screen & love it to bits .Is it worth it ? Well I get out the water clean so I suppose so .You could go for the Shearwater as well .I have never used one but Mark Chase has one & likes it .both will do trimix & ccr at a future date, both the shearwater & the latest VR£ can be integrated to read 3 cells .

Oh how I wish it were late on a Friday in the mid winter and we could pick apart the phrase containing the words "progress" and "rebreather"

As to Trimix computers, there is the VR3 as has been mentioned and is probably the most "popular" of its type but there are others too. DiveRite make one called the Nitek and have just (or are about to release) a new verison . Another option is the Cochran EMC-20H

As colin sid the Shearwater or the VR3. I like Gradient Factor deco so I prefer the Shearwater I also like the fact it can monitor all three cells on a CCR so again i go for the Shearwater.

SHearwater down load package and graph production is much nicer than the VR3 as well.

However, it's a house brick which puts a lot of people off.

VR3 is fine. Id get the VPM version if i got one today but i ran two of the older ones for a few years and thaught they were great but the deco is very conservitive even on zero safety so if you are in to faster deco you might want to consider the Shearwater again.

Example of a Shearwater profile Hatched red is the deco. wiggly line is ascent:

If the X1 Liquivision lives up to expectations, the VR3 going to have a very hard time competing.

I have an OC trimix VR3 and whilst it's pretty good, I'm very dissapointed with it not being 'the only dive computer I'll ever need' by a very long way.

The upgrade path for older models pretty much works out to be: buy another VR3 at full price.

The download facility is a (very expensive) joke and the software is crap. If you buy a VR3 and want to download your dives, realistically you'll need another computer or a Sensus Pro.

that's actually a REALLY interesting readout. Is the vertical lines in the PPo2 you letting it drop and then injecting O2? that's very cool. I also like the way it discerns between the deco profile and what you actually did.
