500 lumen LED light
I see that Dive Rite Express have a 500 lumen LED light for sale for only $360. It is claimed to be as good as a 10watt HID.

Your thoughts gratefully recieved........

I used the umbilical one for a week in the Mexican caves. I'm not convinced it's as bright as a 10W HID, but it was certainly bright enough. The beam wasn't as tight as the HID I normally use, but it was OK for signalling. But it's so small, light and ought to be very hard to break, so I'm seriously thinking about getting one for travel at least, though I'll probably wait 6 months by which time they'll be half the price and brighter.

Jason,

Dive Rite used to produce a 300 Lumen torch. They have recently uprated it to 500 Lumen. Could it be you used the 300 Lumen version?

Anyway, mine is on order and will be hear in a few days. I will organise a night dive for later in the week and see how it goes.

I'm pretty sure it was the 500 lumen as they said they'd just got them in and they're a major Dive Rite dealer for Mexico.

Burn times are all a bit low on full power for cave diving. I was using the Dive Rite with alkaline batteries and getting a couple of days out of each set.

Hmm, would be interested to see if it is comparable to a HID. Neil, when you test it will you do a review for it in the equipment section maybe? Let us know if it really is similar to a 10W?

Would love to do a comparison with a 10w HID but I don't have one of those. The only person in Oman who may have one I don't talk to much....

However I can compare it against......

An Ikelite super8 (200ish lumen)
A Pelican Nemo 4100 (251 lumen)

It should be twice as bright as the above but will it be as well focused?

Only time will tell.....well, next week when the light arrives!
