In a previous job, I virtually lived on Diet Coke and Coffee...is it were so diuretic, then I should be a shrivelled corpse by now surely? Agreed, it is not the best option, but is not going to put you into a hydration deficit either. If your overall diet is sound, then you should get a lot of your hydration needs from your food (fruit and veg especially).

I live in Thailand and normally start the day with a strong coffee and a litre of water. I drink coffee on the dive boat most mornings and then have a diet coke or fizzy fruit juice for lunch. Maybe another 1/2 litre of water in the afternoon and then diet coke, tea or coffee in the evenings. Some beers after work also. Given the climate and 2-4 dives a day, I've yet to get any dehydration problems. Having said that, I am well acclimatised to the climate and have a good tolerance for the heat etc

Not sure what's in that, but you're right about the fruit and veg.

I don't drink tea or coffee so keeping rehydrated on boats is a concern, and water is a bit plain & boring

so I just make up some orange squash in a 1L bottle and take that

Well, my assumption is that whilst caffinated drinks are diuretic, that still suplly more liquid to your body than they cause to be subtracted....just that they are less effective at hydrating you than a non-caffinated drink would be. ....I guess.

my main thought was that would coke be counter productive and cause more problems with the dyuretic in the caffine than the water in the product.

As with the pee hydration test, clear is good well hydrated and the more yellow your pee is the more dehydrated you are.

I can get well hydrated so is the effect of the caffine neglagable??

The caffeine suppresses the body's production of ant-diuretic hormones so you piss more than you should leading to dehydration. Water from reverse-osmosis water makers isn't too effective at rehydrating either. Drink water with Dioralyte. It makes it work better and taste better.

Think its more important to drink something rather than nothing. Not sure how many cups of coffee or tea you are planning to have. As previously mentioned you know by the colour your urine how hydrated you are at that present time.

Think a lot is made of it. Be sensible and dare I say it watch your alcohol intake, that is probably more responsible for dehydration. By that I mean not ripping it up till all hours with little sleep and then diving.

Its all about moderation.

caffeine is my friend, trouble is you can't get a decent cup in Egypt .

Read this report it all seems that caffeine in teas and coffees are not some sort of bad ju ju.
