Think a lot is made of it. Be sensible and dare I say it watch your alcohol intake, that is probably more responsible for dehydration. By that I mean not ripping it up till all hours with little sleep and then diving.

Its all about moderation.

caffeine is my friend, trouble is you can't get a decent cup in Egypt .

I would be more concerned with the overall impact of Coca-cola. Whether it leaves you in hydration deficit depends on many things. The high sugar content causes fluid to be drawn from the tissues into the stomach, decreasing blood volume. The diuretic effect of caffeine is not so great during vigorous exercise providing you continue to drink fluids. When you are not exercising and not drinking fluids (when your diving perhaps) the diuretic effects are fairly huge. Caffeine acts directly on the central nervous system, altering adrenaline production, which is intimately tied to the cardiovascular system, and so raises blood pressure and may effect the subconscious automatic stress response system. If all you are drinking is coke then you could end up dehydrating while you are underwater. After you surface your body is still decompressing and drinking coke is not going to do it any favours particularly.

Allegedly the Coca-cola company have very aggressive lawyers, which might deter respectable scientists from publishing findings that portray high sugar content, caffeine laced, carbonated cola drinks in any sort of negative way, or it might not.

As with the pee hydration test, clear is good well hydrated and the more yellow your pee is the more dehydrated you are.

I can get well hydrated so is the effect of the caffeine neglagable??
Depends whether you end up panicking or getting bent. If you don't the effect was negligible. If you do it is a factor rather than a cause. The diet varieties contain Aspartame which is probably worse for completely different reasons but with similar consequence.

If you wish to convince yourself that drinking high sugar content, caffeine laced, carbonated cola drinks before during and after dives is a good idea then there are plenty of articles and research advocating it. The chemistry seems indicate it probably isn't though.

Apparently EVERYONE can get a taste for water. Ad-hoc experiments have shown that 100% of people provided water as the only available liquid choose to drink it
