Ideally you don't want the cylinder dropping below it's MOD. However it's better to have a cylinder dropper down with no buoy attached then no cylinder at all.

In my post above when l say the skipper should attach it to the line with the boltsnap l mean your smb line.

Hopefully, it will never be needed, but it will go with me on any boat dive where I have planned deco.

I don't think the DSMB would take the weight, and it will just make it more stable. It will also make it a lot easier to recover it.

But in MY humble opinion, anything over 9M with more than 3 mins deco

i'd even forget the skipper clipping it onto your line anyway.

1. He/she would have a right royal pain to come along side, stick the boat in neutral, walk out of the cabin, grab the hook, lift your line, hook it the cylinder on, drop the cylinder down, and all whilst competeing with wind and tide, and trying not to drag you up

or:

2. he/she comes alongside and chucks the cylinder, line and bouy as close as possible to your SMB.

i know what i'd do, and it would number 2! It's also advisable to ask the skipper if they are happy to do this for you. After all, once you're in the water, it's technically your responsibility what happens - not theirs.

Oi Fishy, what boats you been on recently?

l doubt there are many boats around with twelve people using twelve sets of historic dive gear......well ok....unless they're Georgie's and Jarrod's boys.

Unless you've practiced it a few times with the skipper.
One of the many joys of diving midweek is that if you go out with say six people on the boat the skipper's more chilled and happy to feck about with drills like this.
