How do you deploy a drop tank ?

After seeing a couple of people with drop tanks left on board ,I began to wonder how people got the skipper to "send" you your drop tank ?
No 1 system was to pinch one of the skippers buoys & ask him to drop it next to the yellow smb if it was send up .

No 2 system was to get the skipper to lift the smb ,clip said drop tank onto line so that it slid down the line to you .

So what do you do ?
the given here is that either way (or different ?) you have to explain to the skipper !

May I refer you to: Drop Bottle

I think that covered may of the options - and opinions

Sorry if you ment this to be a different question but it read as a very similar thing.

You forgot option 3, which is to have your own buoy (why should you expect the skipper to provide it)

Skipper sees your yellow bag, and then throws your drop tank as close as possible.

Steve
I listed the 2 options that I had seen in use , didn't say I agreed with them . That's why I asked the question

What he said. Here's one I made earlier:

33" circumference buoy with a gaffing loop. 6m line with a loop at the end for attaching the drop bottle and an Alpine Butterfly loop at 3m.

The drop tank be any stage-rigged bottle but I use a reg with a longer hose and an LP inflation hose.

First of all the skipper gets as close to your bob as he can, pops out onto the deck, gets the boat hook and pulls in yor blob. This would mean that he is going to pull it 3-4 metres out of the water to be able to be attached the drop tank.

This could mean that you have just been pulled to the surface, so just get on the boat and breathe the O2, it's easier.

However assuming you released the reel and let the skipper lift it, he attaches it (as above) and drops it all back into the water, that is just asking for it to be tangled up. Then you have to find it when it is dropped back in...as you may have drifted away.

So much better for the skipper to just throw the drop tank at the yellow blob.

Steve

having never done this, do you descend lower than the length of rope your drop bottle is on? i would of thought a 10lt steel is going to hurt if it smacks into you.

It comes down very slowly, believe me, especially if it is an aluminium cylinder. And you will also be looking for it
