HID bulbs

Mate of mine went into lDS and started talking about buying a HID (Light Cannon I think) he proceeded to show concern about the cost of replacement bulbs. Th eyoung lady behind the counter responded with, "you are so right, the manufacturers charge a fortune, we get ours from B&Q" and showed him a draw full.

Wind up?

Matt

Cheapest I've heard was about 25 quid, but of course the guy could not remember where that was from.

I did not think HID lamps were available from B&Q but could be wrong, I know that a lot of the Halogen/Zeon lights use a standard fitting and can be bought for a franction of the price else where (although B&Q are not cheap for this sort of thing). For instance the bulb on this page (http://www.bltdirect.co.uk/) is used in a few of the cheaper Kowlowski type lights like the Beaver - Is it possible she was getting confused?

I reckon they may have had a draw full of 12v low voltage halogen bulbs.
There seem to be a few different makes of torch using these now.
B&Q are fairly expensive though, there are definitely cheaper places.

I just can't see B&Q stocking HID bulbs, to what end? They are not exactly commonly used items.

I believe the HID bulb and ballast comes from one manufacturer, Welch-Allyn Lighting Products in New York state in the USA. It is not just a matter of changing the bulb for a cheaper one.

i manage an engineering/lighting company and looked into importing these from WAL as JJJBBB mentioned above, the price Underwater Kinetics charge was about the same price i could import them for.... Just the price of the technology at the moment... Wait till some of the new high-power LED's start coming out though... One of my friends who works for a big lighting company reckons incandescent (halogen etc) lighting may well be a thing of the past in 5/6 years.... (!?)
