Question Halcyon Scouts - turning themselves on

Following on from Foggy's post about a backup light being left on I was wondering if anyone has managed to find a foolproof method of preventing Halcyon Scouts from turning themselves on? I have two of these, mounted on my harness DIR style (it's the only bit that is!) and I find that at least one of them will turn on at some point in every dive, this is frustrating as I'm going through a lot of batteries and am concerned that they may be flat when I need to use them

do they twist on?

if so just unscrew them slightly more so long as the oring is covered by the bezel its sealed

the UK mini Q40 is the same - I used to set mine up to come on

Yes Beanie, they do twist on. I'm a little paranoid about unscrewing them too far and then making a cock up of turning them on I suppose. They are nice lights, quite bright, lightweight and a good size, just to easy to turn on.

I'm not sure if this is fool-proof enough, but it works for me...

Turn it on. Then turn it just-off. Then push the glass/bezel back against the torch (as will happen underwater). If this causes the torch to turn on, back it off a little more. Repeat until the torch doesn't turn on when you push. Add another 1/8 turn off if you like.

If you only open the torch to this extent it won't flood. (At least mine haven't yet). The rubber is easy to turn, and they will turn a little in transport too - it's worth checking them each dive.

Screw them in to turn them on, then back them off until the light goes out, and a tad more. Push on the end of the light to simulate water pressure and hey presto, your light shouldn't come on.

If it does however turn on, then your buddy should spot it and turn it off for you if he's a nice chap.

Thanks David & Froggie, this sounds plausible, I'll give it a go tomorrow (60m).

Hi,

when you check you backup lights before each dive, turn them fully on then while putting downwards pressure on the bezel (just like the water pressure does) turn the bezel until the light goes off (then turn a tiny bit more).

Slap your buddy if they are not noticing your backup lights beaming away during your dives!

HTH

Mark.

Thanks Mark, I'll try the downward pressure approach.
