UK C8R over heating

Hi

My C8R light started playing up during a dive in Egypt a couple of weeks back. After the dive I looked inside and it looks like the 20w bulb had overheated and melted itself to the reflector. The document with the torch warned this might happen if the bulb was left on outside of the water, but this has never happened.

I have just mailed Sea and Sea about it so was wondering what you guys thought the most likely outcome would be?

I bought it online almost exactly a year before this incident, but due to being in Egypt at the time it is more than a year by the time I reported it.

Cheers

Conor

just got a reply. Even though I said it happened during a dive, they seem to suggest it couldn't have.

Do you think it is worth it to send it to them when they may say its not their problem?

Dear Conor,

The Underwater Kinetics C8R is designed as a dive torch. It should only be
used underwater so that the heat generated will be conducted away. Melting
of the reflector will only take place if the unit is left switched on in
air.

That said, if you would like to send me the torch I will take a look at it
for you. (Alternatively, you can try your local dive shop or the shop from
where you made the purchase).

Our address is:

Sea & Sea Limited
Philip House
Aspen Way
Paignton
Devon
TQ12 5BT

Please send the complete torch together with the receipt if you have it.

Best regards,

Sea & Sea Limited.

Conor, search the archives there's a long thread about this a few months back.

Had exact same problem with mine, melted through 2 torch head assemblies, but Sea & Sea service was great, and the solution is...

...tighten the screw which is inside the spring on the back of the head assembly til it is tight.

Mine is now good as gold. I check the screw is still tight every month or so.

HTH

Dave.

EDIT - I have the number of a very helpfull chap at Sea & Sea who sorted me out with replacements heads. PM me if you want it...

Conor happened to mine a too, C8R, the reflector was replaced under warranty, they have a design fault I believe and the new models/reflectors are supposed to rectify this. As Dave said check the archives. I think I had a thread suggesting the LDS did a good job. Deep Dive Luton.

Hi guys

Thanks for the replies.

They have told me to check the screw at the back, but I can only see the ones that connect the black plastic faceplate to the silver reflector surround.

Any pointers?

Cheers

Conor

Conor,

The three springs that separate the head assembly from the battery, yeah? Inside one of them is a philips screw head, yeah? Or maybe you have one with a rivet not a screw? If there's a screw head, tighten it, whilst holding the silver circular nut-like thiing on the other side of it, inside the head assembly, with some needle nose pliers. If you have a rivet instead, then I dunno mate, I'd call Sea & Sea and ask.

Hope that makes sense,
Dave.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I couldn't find the screw you mentioned and was about to give up and order a bulb when I got this from a different person at sea and sea.

Hi Conor,

If the bulb has gone white it means that air has entered the globe. If the
reflector is burnt just in the corner and the torch has not been used out of
water, then it may be that the switch plate is over throwing a little.

Please send us the torch and we will sort it out for you.

Regards,

Maybe they check YD I'll let you know how it goes but so far a gold star to them for customer service (especially cos they later agreed for me just to send the reflector)

Cheers all

Conor

Symptoms match what has happened on mine. They fixed it FOC. Can it, the over throw, return and is it user adjustable?

AN Update

Sea and Sea have now sent a replacement refelector and bulbs, quibble free.

Thanks to Sea and Sea and worth keeping in mind if you are buying a UK light, the aftersales service appears to be very good.
