Or, has anyone got the knowledge on building one yourself?

I looked into this a while ago - you can buy them through your LDS but they cost nearly as much as a whole new torch.

If you find out how to make it work with 4 normal D cells (rechargeable or otherwise), please do post it here as it would be a useful backup.

I asked about this a while back on dnet

Basically you need the higher rated Ah cells. It will work though, apparently.

Cheers, Anthony

Thumbs up

Earlier this year after catching the bezel on my torch jumping off the boat over the Hispania on one of the YD Gigs the torch sprung in bits and parts plus battery disappeared into the depths. Thankfully it was retrieved but despite washing out etc etc the battery was beyond hope.
Having recovered the torch bits I rang around for a replacement pack and yeah also found out the pack cost almost as much as the torch, rather silly money the importers/ distributors were asking.

A saviour was at hand http://www.strikalite.co.uk/ I rang them and sent off the corroded very knackered pack.
Excellent service they soldered a new pack up for me which looks identical to the original and "posted it out the same day".

This alternative was half the price of the original and performs every bit as good. Hope this helps

made my own a couple of years ago

not that hard

basically 4 D cells in series with a charging port soldered on

a glue gun (hot melt glue) is handy to glue the things together

Did a similar sort of thing to make a spare battery set for mine for use when access to 240v was difficult.
